We are dedicating this article to our favourite trend of 2018, liquid and cream highlights. The transition from blinding powder highlights which were a-la-mode in 2015 to the natural glow of liquid highlights is something we are truly grateful for.

We love the multi-use functionality of liquid products and the fact that they provide the ability to customize and have fun experimenting with your makeup. Sure, some nights call for a glistening disco ball-esque highlight, but for a daytime look we love the natural “lit from within” look that catches the light in a stunning way. Marc Jacobs Coconut Gel Highlighter

Fashion design giant Marc Jacobs launched a cosmetics line in Sephora stores in 2013, a relative newbie to the beauty scene it is safe to say we were skeptical. Despite many popular product launches, the first product to capture our attention with rave reviews was the Dew Drops in “Dew You”. The product was inspired by Marc Jacob’s love of coconut water and his admiration of glowy, radiant and well-hydrated skin. The shade “Dew You” gives off a golden luminosity and can be worn mixed with a primer or foundation to illuminate the skin or concentrated directly on top of your base to create an intense sheen. We love to mix the product with crème blush for a youthful appearance.

L'Oreal True Match Lumi Glotion

This product landed on shelves recently in New Zealand and has got to be our favourite drugstore launch of the year. L’Oréal developed a line of glow-giving products for its legendary “True Match” line, with the best-selling product being their liquid “Glotion”. They provide a range of shades, from light to deep which we love. It is hard to get your hands on this product, everyone and their mother seems to know that this is worth the hype - if you see it we urge you to pick it up.

Mecca Max Liquid Light

Is there anything more satisfying than a liquid highlighter with a dropper applicator? We consider the Mecca "Liquid Light" a dupe for the Marc Jacobs Dew Drops but with an expanded shade range – from pearl iridescent shades to golden bronzey shades. Mecca Max refers to the product as a metallic highlight, which is true if you build it up, but we love the glisten it creates when applied to your facial high points before foundation. One drop is all you need for this product, a little does a long way. Your best bet is to order this product on the Mecca Cosmetica website.

Glossier Haloscope

This is our second time raving about Glossier’s fantastic stick highlight in an article, read our Glossier brand focus here for an insight into the beauty craze which is this New York-based brand. Haloscope achieves the most natural effect of all the highlighters mentioned but we adore the look of it. The formula is unique in the way that it has a ring of pigment with a stick of moisturizer in the middle, combining both glow and radiance to the face. We apply this directly to the cheekbones, brow bone, cupids bow and the tip of the nose for an all-over glisten. Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter

Can Charlotte Tilbury do no wrong? This makeup artist turned beauty tycoon is constantly launching gorgeous luxury products for her devoted customers. The brand is arguably ahead of the game when it comes to highlight, does the iconic “Bronze and Glow” palette ring a bell? This year her most notable product launch has been the “Hollywood Flawless Filter”, somewhat ambiguous in its name, this product is a multi-function product created with the purpose of enhancing your complexion. It is marketed as a post-primer, pre-foundation step that blurs the skin and boosts the glow, unique in the way that it offers shades to specifically match skin colours. Charlotte Tilbury has referred to it as, ‘the ultimate high gloss, high glow celebrity skin filter in a bottle’ and if that doesn’t make us want to order it we don’t know what will.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfecter

We are finishing our roundup with a cult beauty favourite and makeup staple - Becca's Shimmering Skin Perfector. Becca is the go-to beauty brand for highlighters and this is the product that started the trend of a liquid glow. All of their popular highlight shades come in liquid form, from Moonstone to Topaz and we love the idea of layering their products, apply their liquid highlight first and build it up by tapping the powder on top for a striking luminous look.
