Skincare 101: You’re probably applying these products wrong

As all beauty aficionados know, a good skincare routine is key to achieving fresh and healthy skin. Well hydrated under eyes can cover up any number of sleep-deprived nights, an overnight serum will have your skin magically transform from dull to plump and a lip scrub will make applying lipstick a breeze.
But most people are in the habit of applying skincare so wrong and aren’t even aware that they’re doing their skin more harm than good. The biggest crimes against skin include tugging at fragile skin, over-exfoliating and using way too much moisturiser - we have all been guilty of this. So consider today your refresher course in “Skincare 101”, you may thank us later.
Eye cream

We often overlook the delicacy of the skin underneath our eye, it’s the thinnest and most sensitive area of our face and should be treated with care. Tap your ring finger into your eye cream, and lightly pat it under the eye. Your ring finger has fewer muscles in it and thus applies less pressure onto the skin.
If you're looking to purchase an eye-cream, avoid purchasing one with chemical ingredients and search for one with witch hazel, coconut oil and cucumber seed oil. Some of our favourites include; Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment, The Body Shop Vitamin E Eye Cream, Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream and Estee Lauder ANR Eye Concentrate Matrix (review here).
Serum

Adding serum to your skincare routine elevates the whole process, it can be beneficial for a multitude of reasons. Some reach for a serum to combat signs of ageing like fine lines, or for brightening and hydrating or for acne and hyperpigmentation. Last year we reviewed Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair, read here, and have loved the benefits it provides to our skin.
Serum should be used daily, after exfoliator and toner and before moisturiser and eye cream. Just a few droplets should be enough to sufficiently quench your skin. Our favourite way to apply serum is by dispersing the product over our palms and gently patting it into the skin - ensuring that it soaks into the skin instead of sitting on top of it.
Exfoliator

Exfoliating is considered one of the most essential steps in a skincare routine. A common misconception though is that people will oily skin should stay far away from this type of product - false! One of the main purposes of exfoliating is to stop the skin from producing excess oil.
One mistake that many people make with this step is over-exfoliating. If you like to get your scrub on in the shower every day, think again. This step should be reserved for two to three times a week. Dermatologists recommend that you take a pea-sized amount and massage it into your skin while it’s damp with minimal pressure, avoid sensitive areas like the under-eyes.
